This workshop will provide an introduction to dyeing wool yarn using locally sourced plant dyestuffs. Students will get hands-on experience winding, mordanting, and dyeing wool using dried materials and go home with colorful yarn samples. In addition to the hands-on experience, we’ll use the time while the yarn cooks to discuss harvesting and growing dyestuffs, troubleshooting, and what else is possible with natural dyes. It is good to keep in mind that the experience and outcomes of natural dyeing can vary widely between places, times, and people so come with an open mind ready for whatever the dyepot holds.
This class is open to adults ages 18+. No previous experience necessary. All materials will be provided. Students interested in starting a dye garden at home will also receive a small quantity of saved seeds to plant in the spring.
